AIR TESTING - WHAT IS IT?
Air testing measures how much air escapes through gaps in the building fabric.
Pulse testing (shown in the image) is a low‑pressure airtightness test that gives the building a short burst of air, and then measures how quickly the pressure drops.
A more airtight home loses less heat, reduces energy bills, and lowers its environmental impact.
EXISTING & NEW BUILDS
EXISTING DWELLINGS
Current EPC methodologies use default air permeability values where no test data is available.
A measured test can show that the property performs better than the default assumption thus improving your EPC score.
NEW DWELLINGS
Air testing is mandatory for all new builds.
Its optional for conversions but its recommended as it is guaranteed to improve your EPC rating.
Airtightness needs to be balanced with good ventilation. Too airtight without proper ventilation can lead to condensation and mould.
Getting this balance right is essential for a healthy, efficient home.
